The highlight of the trip for me was going to a Mets Yankees game at Yankee Stadium. Danielle invited two of her friends, Joe Venilla and Nick to attend the game with us. Joe is a Long Island native and Nick is working in New York at a radio station. Nick is from south Florida. We had about an hour and a half subway ride from Danielle's apartment. On the way out of Danielle's apartment she tripped and fell down her stairs, spraining her ankle. We got some ice, gave her some Advil and told her to walk it off. Outside the stadium I was able to buy her an ace bandage so she had everything going her way.
The game was great. The atmosphere was really charged up. It was louder and rowdier than anything I've ever seen at Wrigley Field. There were 57,000 people at the game. Security was tight, a cop at every entrance to seating, cops on the roof of the building, and cops on buildings across the street. We saw 5 or 6 altercations between Mets and Yankees fans. Cops and stadium security were all over them and they got tossed. Seems like some people were not able to handle their $6 beers.
The subway back was packed; I'm talking nuts to butts. The subway cars are air-conditioned but waiting areas are not. It was hot; I'm talking sweat through your shirt hot. We got back to Danielle's much cooler apartment and I went to sleep because I had a big drive back home.
My drive home was uneventful but long, about 850 miles, mostly on I-80. I was stuck in traffic where they were doing roadwork in Ohio, other than that it was pretty smooth sailing. I left at 6 AM and got home at 10:30 PM. Next time I think I'll fly.
My impression of New York is very positive. I found the people very friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to my next trip!
